NAESV has released a statement in response to the Supreme Court decision in Kennedy v. Louisiana to overturn the death penalty for child sexual assault cases.
- Sen. Biden (D-DE) budget amendment increases VAWA funds by $100 million!

Sen. Biden’s (D-DE) budget amendment for VAWA programs passed the Senate with unanimous consent last night. The Biden amendment to the budget will increase the funds available for VAWA programs by $100 million. This is critical in our efforts to increase funding for VAWA in the Budget and Appropriations process for FY 2009.
- President Releases FY 2009 Budget - Devastating Cuts to Victim Services

The President released his $3 trillion FY 2009 budget on February 4th to Congress which freezes domestic discretionary spending for the next five years. In a devastating blow to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking, the budget includes a cut to OVW programs by $120 million, from $400M to $280M -- and would turn it into one block grant program as the administration proposed last year as well.
- Sexual Assault Services Receives First Time Funding in FY 2008 Appropriations Bill

Sexual assault advocates have reason to celebrate the December 26th signing of the $555 billion Omnibus funding package for FY 2008. For the first time, the Sexual Assault Services Program will be funded and federal resources for sexual assault victim services will be made available! Overall, VAWA programs received a Increased a $17.3 million increase.

- Urgent Alert-Bill that Funds VAWA Programs to be Addressed This Week

On Tuesday, December 11 the U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a compromise year-end funding bill, which includes VAWA and VOCA funding. The Senate is expected to vote later in the week.
- House and Senate Fail to Complete Work on Critical Federal Funding Bills

Unfortunately, efforts to finish work on the two federal funding bills that provide critical resources for programs within the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA): the Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) Appropriations bill and the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (LHHS) Appropriations bill have come to a screeching halt.

On July 25, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly for 4 amendments to increase funding for VAWA by $29 million and for VOCA by $10 million in the Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) Appropriations bill.

On June 28th, the full Senate Appropriations Committee passed its FY 2008 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill which included $10 million for the Sexual Assault Services Program! The next stop – the Floor of the Senate.

NAESV and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) invite ALL advocates to join us in April as we address the importance of encouraging Congress to fully fund all programs included in the Violence Against Women Act.

Although funding for fiscal year 2007 is yet to be finalized, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Rob Portman, has heard from a bipartisan group of 110 Members of Congress expressing support for funding the Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) at its authorized level of $50 million in FY 2008.

NAESV Interim-President Monika Johnson Hostler was one of a select group of individuals invited to participate in the White House Conference on School Safety on October 10. Gathering together stakeholders from education, justice and others the meeting was called in response to the recent incidents of violence occurring in schools across the country.

- Victims of Sexual Assault One Step Closer to Federal Aid

Help may be on the way to our nation’s rape crisis centers. The first dedicated federal funding stream for services to victims of sexual assault took one step closer to becoming a reality today when a Senate Committee approved $5 million for the Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP).
- Legislative Action Days Huge Success!

NAESV proudly joined forces with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) for the 7th Annual National Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Legislative Action Days. Sexual assault and domestic violence advocates from across the country joined together and met with their members of Congress and staff to advocate for the full funding of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) signed into law by President Bush on January 5, 2006.
