Sexual Assault Congressional Briefing Held
Over 100 people, including Congressional staff and advocates, were in attendance on April 5 to hear actress and sexual assault survivor Gabrielle Union speak poignantly of her rape and recovery with the help of local rape crisis services, law enforcement and the support of her family. The briefing was hosted by NAESV, Lifetime Television, the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault, the National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault, the National Center for Victims of Crime and Women's Policy Inc.
One of many events taking place across the country as part of Sexual Assault Awareness month, the briefing focused on raising awareness and support for the new Sexual Assault Services Program, which provides a federal funding stream for local rape crisis centers. The program was passed into law as part of the reauthorization of VAWA, but still must be funded by Congress.
In addition to Union, a panel of experts who work with sexual assault victims painted a picture of the realities facing a rape victim and the services he/she requires. Moderated by NAESV President Marybeth Carter, the panel included: Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs Regina Schofield; Leslie Slingsby, Director of Victim Services, Network of Victim Assistance (NOVA); Maneesha Kelkar, Director, Manavi; and Meredith Wagner, Executive Vice President, Public Affairs & Corporate Communications for Lifetime Television.
